Market outlook
Stable Outlook 7/10
The card has durable collector demand and strong character appeal, but the available evidence does not establish a reliable short-term price trend specifically for Roaring Skies 98/98. Modern Pokémon chase cards can experience sharp movements based on grading demand, market cycles, and renewed interest in Mega Evolution.
Next months. Likely stable to moderately rising over the next 3-6 months, with the strongest performance expected from well-centered graded 10 or equivalent top-grade copies. Raw cards and lower grades may track the broader market more closely.
Long term. Positive but cyclical over 1-3 years. High-grade copies have the best appreciation potential because the character, artwork, Secret Rare status, and Mega Evolution nostalgia provide durable demand; however, prices may undergo substantial corrections if speculative demand weakens.
History
Rayquaza is a Legendary Dragon- and Flying-type Pokémon introduced in Generation III. It is associated with the ozone layer and serves as a mediator between Groudon and Kyogre. Mega Rayquaza is Rayquaza’s Mega Evolution and is central to the Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire storyline. The card depicts Shiny Mega Rayquaza, distinguished by its alternate coloration and status as one of the era’s premier chase Pokémon.
First released in English on May 6, 2015, as part of the XY—Roaring Skies expansion. The card is numbered 98/98 and is a Secret Rare full-art Mega Pokémon-EX.
- M Rayquaza EX has the Emerald Break attack, whose damage increases with the number of Benched Pokémon.
- As a Mega Pokémon-EX, playing it ended the player’s turn immediately under the XY-era Mega Evolution rules.
- The card is a Secret Rare positioned beyond the regular 98-card Roaring Skies set numbering and is one of the expansion’s principal chase cards.
- It features Shiny Mega Rayquaza rather than the standard-color Mega Rayquaza.

Collector notes
Condition. Check centering, especially left-to-right and top-to-bottom alignment; whitening on the blue reverse border; edge chipping; corner wear; surface scratches in the holofoil; dents, pressure marks, print lines, and silvering along the edges. Full-art cards are also vulnerable to factory roller lines, indentation, and scratches that may be difficult to see without angled light. Avoid confusing this card with the visually similar M Rayquaza EX from XY—Ancient Origins, which is card 98/98 of a different set.
Storage. Store in a soft penny sleeve inside a rigid top loader or semi-rigid card holder. For long-term storage, use an archival-quality sleeve and a fitted card saver, keep the card upright in a dry temperature-stable environment, and avoid sunlight, humidity, heat, and loose storage. Do not use PVC holders or over-tight sleeves.
Authenticity. Verify the set symbol, collector number 98/98, English text, correct attack wording, authentic Pokémon copyright line, standard card dimensions, and the characteristic XY-era reverse design. Compare holographic texture, font, border color, and artwork with a verified scan. Warning signs include overly dark or washed-out colors, incorrect fonts, blurry fine print, wrong holo pattern, unusually thin or glossy cardstock, and dimensions that differ from standard Pokémon cards. For high-value copies, use a reputable grading service or professional authentication and inspect the card under magnification and UV light.
